Scratch Assessment

The depth of the scratch decides the repair.

Not every scratch is repaired the same way. A light surface mark in the clear coat is completely different to a scratch that has cut through colour or exposed primer. That is why SpotFix starts with assessment before promising a result.

If the scratch is sitting in the clear coat, polishing may improve or remove it. If colour is missing, polishing alone cannot replace paint. In those cases, a touch-up or localised refinishing may be the better option.

Scratch Types

What type of scratch do you have?

This helps customers understand whether they are looking at a polish, touch-up or paint repair.

Level 1

Clear coat marks

Light swirls, bush marks and surface scratches that may improve with machine polishing.

Level 2

Paint transfer

Marks from another object sitting on top of the paint. Some can be removed without painting.

Level 3

Colour damage

Scratches that have cut through the paint colour usually need more than a polish.

Level 4

Primer or metal

Deep scratches with exposed primer or metal need repair to protect and improve the area.

Polish Or Paint?

Choosing the right fix matters.

Polishing may suit

  • Light clear coat scratches.
  • Hazy scuffs and minor surface marks.
  • Some paint transfer that has not cut through.
  • Sale-prep marks where improvement is the goal.
  • Areas where paint is still intact.

Paint repair may suit

  • Scratches where colour is missing.
  • Key scratches that have cut too deep.
  • Primer showing through the damaged area.
  • Deep bumper or panel scratches.
  • Damage that polishing will only make shiny, not fixed.

FAQ

Scratch repair questions.

Clear answers before you book, so you know what is realistic.

Can scratches be polished out?

Only if the scratch has not gone through the clear coat. If paint is missing, polishing will not replace it.

Can you repair key scratches?

Often, but the best repair depends on the length, depth, colour and panel location.

Will it be completely invisible?

The goal is a clean cosmetic improvement. The final result depends on the damage, colour and repair method.

Can you quote from photos?

Yes. Clear photos are usually the fastest way to determine whether the scratch is suitable for mobile repair.
