The frustrating answer is that there is no single price for a car scratch. A mark that looks ugly in a photo might only be paint transfer sitting on top of the clear coat. Another scratch that looks small may have cut through colour and exposed the substrate underneath. Those two repairs are completely different jobs.
The first question: how deep is the scratch?
Scratch depth is the biggest starting point. Light marks in the clear coat may respond to polishing. Paint transfer can sometimes be removed without repainting. Once a scratch has cut through the colour coat, however, refinishing is usually needed if you want the damage properly corrected.
A simple test is to look at the scratch under clean, bright light. If the mark changes or disappears when wet, it may be largely in the clear coat. If you can see primer, plastic or metal, the repair is more involved.
What actually changes the repair price?
The size of the damaged area matters, but it is not the only factor. The panel location, access, body lines, paint colour and the amount of preparation required all affect the repair. Metallics, pearls and three-stage colours can also require more care to achieve a convincing colour transition.
Previous repairs matter too. Poor filler work, failing clear coat or an old colour mismatch can turn a straightforward-looking scratch into a larger refinishing job once the area is assessed properly.
Polish, touch-up or paint repair?
Polishing is suited to light clear-coat defects and some paint transfer. Touch-up paint is a practical improvement for small chips and isolated marks, but it should not be sold as an invisible respray. Localised paint repair is the stronger option when colour has been removed and the surrounding area is suitable for refinishing.
The right choice depends on the result you expect. A daily driver being tidied before sale may need a different solution from a prestige vehicle where finish quality is the priority.
When does mobile scratch repair make sense?
Mobile repair is well suited to localised cosmetic damage where the repair area can be controlled and the vehicle does not require structural work. Bumper corners, smaller scratches and isolated paint defects are common examples.
Larger panel damage, severe distortion, rust or repairs requiring major disassembly may be better suited to a traditional body shop. A professional quote should tell you that upfront rather than force every job into the same repair method.
How to get a more accurate quote
Clear photos make a huge difference. Send one close photo of the damage, one photo from roughly a metre away and a wider image showing the panel or side of the vehicle. Include the make, model, colour and your suburb.
That context helps identify the size and location of the repair and reduces the chance of a vague estimate changing once the vehicle is seen.
